Transforming Pharmaceutical Supply Chains through Innovation Beyond Regulatory Compliance: The Role of Supply Chain Innovation and Mapping in Reducing Carbon Emissions within Pakistan’s Pharmaceutical Industry
Abstract
The pharmaceutical industry is increasingly confronted with the dual challenge of ensuring regulatory compliance while simultaneously responding to rising environmental concerns, particularly those associated with carbon emissions embedded within complex supply chain networks. In emerging economies such as Pakistan, pharmaceutical supply chains are characterized by energy-intensive manufacturing processes, temperature-controlled logistics, fragmented supplier structures, and growing regulatory scrutiny, all of which contribute to heightened carbon footprints. Against this backdrop, this study aims to examine how pharmaceutical firms can move beyond a narrow compliance-driven approach toward a more strategic, innovation-led pathway for supply chain decarbonization. Specifically, the research investigates the role of supply chain innovation practices in driving carbon emission reduction, while emphasizing the mediating influence of supply chain mapping and cost efficiency, alongside the moderating effect of regulatory pressure. Drawing on resource-based and sustainability-oriented perspectives, the study conceptualizes supply chain innovation as a multidimensional capability encompassing process redesign, digital integration, energy-efficient technologies, and data-driven decision-making. Supply chain mapping is positioned as a critical mechanism that enhances end-to-end visibility, enabling firms to identify emission hotspots, inefficiencies, and decarbonization opportunities across upstream, midstream, and downstream activities.
